Tonight at 8:30 p.m., two of the biggest favorites in the NFC to reach the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers (1-0) and the Seattle Seahawks (1-0) will face off in the first of two divisional showdowns that could make be the difference in wildcard berths or division titles. While the Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams have promising clubs, the cream of the crop in the NFC West these days are the Niners and Seahawks. Both sides have quarterbacks that will be compared to one another for years to come-Colin Kaepernick for San Francisco, and Russell Wilson for Seattle.
Both signal-callers are young, strong-armed, mobile, and entered the league with little fanfare. Now, they are among the league's elite passers. Beyond the quarterbacks, there is plenty of bad blood between these contenders; 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has acted like a strong wind too, fanning the flames.
In the offseason Harbaugh flippantly commented on the multiple steroid suspensions that hit Seattle's ferocious defense, and the Seahawks haven't forgotten them.
Harbaugh's original comments were: "You always want to be above reproach, especially when you're good, because you don't want people to come back and say, 'They're winning because they're cheating."
Safety Earl Thomas told members of the media that the Seahawks were indeed insulted by the remarks. Of course we'd take it that way," Thomas said. "When you carry yourself like a champion on and off the field, good stuff is going to happen for you. ... I don't think our coach (Pete Carroll) would do that."
Kaepernick expects there to be lots of trash talk tonight, but he has a solution to end it all. "You go out and make plays, the chirping stops."
