Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s "little brother" Adrien Broner is in headlines again because of his mouth. The man who calls himself "The Problem," may have caused himself a big problem with comments he made recently about mixed martial arts.
Broner, the WBA welterweight champion, recently told FightHype.com that it is far more difficult to be a great boxer than mixed martial arts fighter, and claimed to not be a fan of MMA.
"I'm really not too big on MMA. I really don't look at it as a real sport because anybody can come into MMA and learn that. You can learn that," Broner said. "Listen, you can't just come in to boxing and be a world champion. You've got to be born with it ... Right now, you can go into MMA, learn all the submission moves and be a world champion. It doesn't matter how long it takes. I don't give a f*** what you do, you can try to come over to boxing, and you won't ever be a world champion. I'm not disrespecting you, but I'm just saying, that's how it works."
Broner also made some comments mocking Floyd Mayweather's September 14th opponent, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, on the latest episode of Showtime's All Access series that gives fight fans a look into the training camp experiences of each fighter.
Broner paid Mayweather a visit, and the pair traded derogatory pop culture references that resembled Alvarez. Broner came up with "Carrot Top,"; Mayweather called Canelo "Chucky," from the Child's Play horror movies, and "Blake Griffin," the fair-haired former NBA Dunk Contest champion who plies his trade for the Los Angeles Clippers.
Both fighters might be smart to tone down their rhetoric. In Canelo, Mayweather is facing perhaps the most powerful opponent of his career, while Broner is expected to square off with knockout artist Marcos Maidana in December on pay-per-view.
Broner should also hope he doesn't run into any UFC fighters and say the wrong thing; he could be choked out if he doesn't pick up the martial arts in the near future.
He has since apologized for his flippant comments regarding MMA on Twitter:
