After losing Andre Brown for significant time due to a broken leg in the preseason, the Giants lost some depth at the running back position. In Sunday night's opener, starter David Wilson fumbled twice, earning a benching for the rest of the game from head coach Tom Coughlin.
Now, the Giants are looking for extra insurance at running back, and are revisiting old territory. According to reports, ex-Giant Brandon Jacobs, who was on both of the G-Men's most recent Super Bowl squads, is going to work out and attempt to land a spot.
The Giants are also rumored to be working out Willis McGahee, who was last seen chewing up yardage for the Denver Broncos last season. In 10 games in 2012, McGahee picked up 731 yards, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. McGahee is the kind of veteran back who excels in pass blocking as well, which has been a thorn in the side of Wilson since last year.
While the Giants are working out potential backs, head coach Tom Coughlin made sure to tell reporters that Wilson's days are far from numbered. "Give us a little time to work on this thing," Coughlin said. "[Wilson] is still very much in our thoughts. He's got to play -- he's a very talented young man. But you just can't do that. Every time they touch you, you're going to turn the ball over?"
After pulling Wilson, Da'Rel Scott got most of the carries and touches out of the Giants' backfield, rushing five times for 23 yards. He also was heavily involved in the passing game, catching five passes for 51 yards.
Despite Scott's effectiveness, and the decision to work out more rushers, Wilson is likely to regain his starting role. Last year, Wilson averaged five yards per carry on limited touches, while two of his four rushing scores were 40 yards or more.
