NFL Rumors: Kickoff Returner Leon Washington To Return To New York Jets? [VIDEO]

The New York Jets may be closing in on a reunion with kickoff returner Leon Washington.

According to ESPN, the Jets and Giants have both expressed interest in the kick returner, who was cut by the New England Patriots in the team's final roster trims last weekend. Washington worked out for the Giants Tuesday.

The Jets drafted Joe McKnight in 2010 to replace the departed Washington after the team traded him because they couldn't come to terms on a new deal following a season where Washington broke his leg in 2009. After a tumultuous training camp full of off-the-field mishaps and some subpar play, McKnight became expendable and was cut by the Jets this preseason. ESPN reports that Clyde Gates is the most suitable player to replace McKnight unless the Jets decide to bring back Washington or some other outside source.

Washington, 29, had one touchdown last season and made the Pro Bowl. Washington has played in the league for seven seasons, spending his first four with New York from 2006-09 then his last three with Seattle from 2010-12, where he served as a kickoff returner and running back for the Seahawks, where Jets current general manager John Idzik served as an executive during Washington's tenure.

Washington showed how dynamic he could be in 2010, when he returned a 92-yard kickoff return for Seattle in a game against the San Francisco 49ers. A video of that play can be seen below:

In four years with the Jets, Washington played in 55 games and had 370 attempts for 1,782 yards with 13 touchdowns and averaged 32.4 yards-per-game.

The Jets can use a spark and some good news as the team has been under a ton of media scrutiny the past few seasons and are looking to bounce back from a 6-10 season and third place AFC East finish last year.
