Joe McKnight, Braylon Edwards Cut: New York Jets Announce Roster Changes Monday

The New York Jets announced 15 roster cuts Monday, among them being controversial running back/kick returner Joe McKnight and wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

McKnight, 25, had a very interesting offseason and training camp--most notably off the field. After failing a conditioning test and showing up to camp out of shape, McKnight eventually passed the test but sustained a head injury and suffered through dehydration while having trouble making it back to the field. It was then reported that McKnight failed to pay traffic tickets and even had his car impounded and had to pay $320 in fees to cover the expense.

All of that would have been enough for one person to call it a terrible training camp, however it was followed up with some more troubles, one being a major health scare and the second being just plain dumb. After McKnight collapsed on the field in training camp earlier this month, he threatened a Twitter user that he thought was a reporter due to their criticism of him and he asked if the user was outside, seemingly hoping to fight him after just collapsing moments before.

McKnight tweeted the following after the news broke:

McKnight had been with the Jets since 2010, and had rushed for 502 yards on 112 attempts for the team over a three-year period. Monday, it was announced that McKnight will no longer be vying for a spot on the team.

McKnight boasted a lot of confidence in his chances of winning the job of starting at running back and as a special teams player earlier in training camp.

"I don't care who they bring in, they're going [to have to] kill me to take my spot," McKnight said according to USA Today at the start of camp. "You understand that now?" Just because they bring [Mike] Goodson and [Chris] Ivory in, they already think I'm gone. They just bringing people in for competition, they ain't bringing nobody in to say, 'Joe is done.'"

With the cut, it seems Joe is done. It now looks like Goodson or Ivory will get the carries for the Jets this season.

Meanwhile, Braylon Edwards can be added to the cut list.

Edwards, 30, in his third stint with New York, was cut after playing in the first two preseason games for the team but being held out of the third game against the New York Giants on Saturday. Edwards had five catches for 72 yards in the first two preseason games for the Jets. Throughout his career, Edwards has appeared in 102 games and has 359 career receptions for 5,522 yards and 40 touchdowns.

In three seasons with the Jets, Edwards played in 31 games, and had 98 catches for 1,570 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Jets originally acquired Edwards in 2009 in a trade with the Cleveland Browns and the receiver stayed with the team until after the 2010 season. His second stint came late last season after he was dropped by the Seahawks and picked up by New York.

Edwards averaged 17.1 yards per catch and had seven touchdowns in 2010 with the Jets, but only had 18 catches between the Jets and Seahawks last season, and had just 15 catches with the San Francisco 49ers in 2011.

McKnight and Edwards are just two of 15 players to be cut by the Jets, according to USA Today. The list of Monday cuts includes veteran guard Stephen Peterman, running back Chad Spann, offensive linemen Patrick Ford and Trey Gilleo, wide receivers Joe Collins, Marcus Rucker, K.J. Stroud and Rahsaan Vaughn, linebacker Sean Progar-Jackson, defensive backs Donnie Fletcher and Bret Lockett, punter Ryan Quigley and long snapper Patrick Scales.
