Michael Vick, 35, thinks he still has what it takes to help an NFL team. The harsh reality of the NFL is telling Vick that if he wants to help, it will probably have to be as a backup. Vick is visiting with the Steelers today, according to reports. Clearly, he will be a No. 2 behind Ben Roethlisberger.

Vick signed with the Jets last season, but failed to beat out Geno Smith in training camp. Vick did replace Smith in Week 6, and made three starts in 2014. He was pedestrian, throwing three touchdowns against two interceptions, and never surpassing 196 yards through the air in any game with Gang Green. On the ground he appeared to have lost a lot of zip too. He took off 23 times for 156 yards and didn’t score.
Vick has made it clear he’s available, yet several quarterback-needy teams didn’t even give him a look. The Buffalo Bills are strongly considering starting Tyrod Taylor, a sixth-round pick in 2011 with 35 career pass attempts, rather than bring in Vick. And Rex Ryan was Vick’s coach last year.

“Mike will tell you, he’s not built really for a bad weather quarterback. He doesn’t have great big hands, and the weather affects him some. And he’d be the first one to tell you,” Ryan said. “You get the wind that we’re gonna have in our stadium and the snow and all that stuff, that’s not in his best interests. And quite honestly, I considered it. We considered it. And I know that’s not the spot for him.”
The Texans also have a shaky quarterback situation. They have named Brian Hoyer their man over Ryan Mallett, but it’s hard to imagine Vick not giving those two some more competition. At 35, with declining speed, and no reputation for accuracy, it seems Vick’s days of entering a locker room with the presumption of starting are behind him.
