Amir Khan has been very vocal in the last couple of weeks about wanting a chance to fight boxing's pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. after he takes on Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. The problem there is that Khan must first beat Devon Alexander on December 7th.
The problem there is that the two need a place to actually have the fight.
According to reports, Golden Boy Promotions is having issues locking down a location for Khan vs. Alexander, after the dream scenario of Dubai fell through. The main reason for breakdowns in the Dubai talks was Alexander's trepidation at fighting in the Middle East.
Now, some other ideas being thrown against the wall are the U.K. and Barclays Center. Fighting in the U.K. would absolutely suit Khan, who is a British native, but might be a problem for Alexander. Meanwhile Barclays Center has hosted several successful bouts this year, including Bernard Hopkins vs. Tavoris Cloud, Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah, and Adrien Broner vs. Paulie Malignaggi.
Location could be very important for Khan. He is coming off consecutive victories against Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz, but his career is still in a precarious position. Despite being an entertaining, offense-first fighter, Khan has suffered two bad defeats to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. A third loss to an upper tier opponent could spell doom for Khan as a legitimate pay-per-view star.
Khan subscribes to another reality, however, and doesn't appear to be taking the threat Alexander poses entirely seriously. Most of his recent comments have been directed at "Money" Mayweather and centered around the financial windfall their pairing could bring about.
"Everywhere I've been going people ask me when I'm fighting Floyd," Khan said. Maybe I got knocked out or didn't perform well in some fights, but my style would be exciting to watch against him."
