Plaxico Burress may have reached the end of the line as an NFL receiver, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who reported that Plax may miss the entire 2013 season with a torn rotator cuff.
Burress landed incorrectly on his shoulder while jumping for a catch in practice over two defenders, and tore the rotator cuff. Burress was believed to be a contender to make the roster as a fourth or fifth receiver, battling mainly with Jericho Cotchery.
Burress appeared in just three games for Pittsburgh last season, scoring once while making three catches for 42 yards. He began his career as a Steeler, though, making 264 catches for 4,206 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Burress' relationship with the black and yellow soured, however, and they let him go to the New York Giants where his career truly blossomed. In four seasons with Big Blue, Burress reeled in 244 balls for 3,681 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also made the winning touchdown catch in New York's 2007 Super Bowl victory over the then-unbeaten New England Patriots.
In 2008, Burress was having another fine campaign and the Giants were flying high when disaster struck. While in a New York City nightclub a gun illegally possessed by Burress was accidentally fired, piercing Burress' leg and necessitating a hospital visit.
Burress was treated harshly by the court system, which, in New York, treats gun charges very seriously. Burress eventually served 21 months in prison for his transgressions.
In 2011, Burress was given another opportunity after his release from prison, and in the Big Apple to boot. This time, Burress was donning the green and white uniform of the New York Jets. Burress didn't recapture his glory days by any stretch of the imagination, but he was a reliable red zone target for Mark Sanchez.
Plaxico had 42 catches for 612 yards and eight touchdowns. Now, facing a lost season and the unforgiving tick of the clock, Burress' career is likely shot.
