David Wright Injury: New York Mets Third Basemen Re-Aggravates Hamstring, Leaves Game

The New York Mets defeated the Kansas City Royals Friday night at Citi Field when Eric Young Jr. hit his first homerun as a Met in the bottom of the 11th to give the Mets a 4-2 walk-off win, but the overall mood after the game was somber.

All-Star third baseman David Wright suffered a right hamstring strain during the game, and left the contest in the 10th inning. With the game tied at 2-2 in the 10th, Wright beat out a single for an infield hit, but came up limping. Wright was hunched over after racing to earn the single, and after he was attended to by the Mets training staff, he left the game quickly.

Wright will undergo an MRI Saturday and is expected to meet with the media afterwards. Mets manager Terry Collins didn't seem to optimistic when asked about Wright's injury following the game.

"Most likely, not all that good," Collins told ESPN on Wright's prognosis.

Wright already had some problems with his hamstring coming into the game, saying his legs felt tight, but Collins insisted that Wright wasn't hiding a more serious injury from the team.

Wright, who started at third base for the National League All-Star team in July, is hitting .309 with 16 homeruns and 54 RBIs this year. The Mets captain signed a 7-year $122 million contract extension this past offseason to stay in New York.

Wright, 30, may be replaced by Josh Satin or Justin Turner if he has to miss significant time.

While it's unclear if Wright will land on the disabled list, the negative tone of Collins mixed with the fact that Triple-A Las Vegas utility man Mike Baxter is headed to New York, it seems as though Wright may be out for the long haul.

The Mets (49-58) endured more bad news on a lost season by losing one of its better offensive weapons. The Mets sit 14.5 games out of first place in the National League East, currently lead by the Atlanta Braves.

Wright's two-run homer in the first inning of  last night's game tied Mike Piazza for second on the Mets all-time homerun leaders list with 220 long balls. Daryl Strawberry holds the franchise mark by hitting 252.
