In keeping with tradition, Chivas Guadalajara are attempting to lure the next generation of national team strikers to the Estadio Omnilife. According to ESPN Deportes, the club is interested in signing Pumas UNAM striker and Copa América participant Eduardo Herrera.
Per the report, Pumas' acquisition of Fidel Martinez will allow the club to accept an acceptable offer from its Guadalajara rival.
Herrera made 17 appearances in his Clausura campaign, finishing with a modest five goals. It was enough productivity to earn a call up to Miguel Herrera's Copa America roster. Staying true to form, the 26-year-old justified his inclusion after scoring a brace against Guatemala in Saturday's friendly.
"As a striker, this gives me a ton of confidence to do my job," Herrera said (via Record). "The game was helpful in refining the details. I'm happy with the victory, the goals and obviously as a striker, it's what I look for, to score goals. Now, I have to keep taking advantage of my opportunities and keep moving forward as a team."
"All players hope to be starters and we're going to fight for our positions," he added when asked about his potential playing time in Chile. "But that's up to [head coach] Miguel [Herrera], who will have a difficult job because each player has different qualities. Depending on the opponent, that will determine who plays."
"This game [against Guatemala] helps us prepare for the Copa America and there are two more games that we need to take advantage of."
The next opportunity for both Herrera and Mexico to do so is Wednesday night against Peru.
