MLB TRADE REPORT: Braves Eyeing Peavy at Deadline

According to reports, the Atlanta Braves may be gearing up to make a move for the White Sox's Jake Peavy as we head towards the MLB's trade deadline on Wednesday.

The Braves could use a pitcher now more than ever after they lost Tim Hudson to a gruesome ankle fracture after New York Met's outfielder Eric Young Jr. stepped on Hudson's foot in a race to first base on Wednesday, ending his season.

Hudson had been cruising Wednesday night, holding the Mets to one run on four hits before the injury, and had an 8-7 overall record in 2013 with a 3.97 ERA and 95 strikeouts before his season came to an abrupt halt. The Braves are reportedly looking for a right-hander, and Jake Peavy has landed on their radar.

Peavy, 32, has $4.8 million on his salary this year and is owed another $29.5 million over the next two years. The 6-foot-1 righty owns a 8-4 record this season with a 4.28 ERA and 1.138 WHIP. If the Braves fail to land Peavy, they are also looking at Kansas City's Ervin Santana. Santana is 6-6 with a 3.06 ERA this season. The upside to Peavy over Santana is the fact that he still has time remaining on his contract, while Santana is set to be a free agent at the end of the season. MLB.com reported that the Braves may also kick the tires on the Brewer's Kyle Lohse.

The Braves aren't the only team in the mix for Peavy, who may very well be the hottest commodity on the market now that Matt Garza has been traded from the Cubs to the Rangers. Reports indicate that the Cardinals, Red Sox and Athletics--all division leaders looking to shore up their starting rotations--are very much in the mix for Peavy.

The Braves are hoping to land Peavy or at least a quality right-hander during the deadline as they look to expand on their commanding National League East lead and go deep in the playoffs. The Braves enter Friday with a 57-45 record, good enough for an eight game lead over the second place Phillies.

While the Braves have faced little-to-no competition in their division, there will be plenty of competition trying to land Peavy.
