WWE Superstar John Cena Talks PEDs, Ryan Braun Suspension And MLB Drug Scandal

While wrestling has been far from scandal-free when it comes to steroids and other performance enhancing drugs, the face of World Wrestling Entertainment, John Cena, spoke out on Tuesday following the news of Ryan Braun being suspended 65 games by Major League Baseball for violating its drug policy

Cena, current WWE Champion and avid body builder, took to Twitter to wrestle the matter of PEDs and also to congratulate MLB for the decision to suspend Braun.

"Hats off to @MLB for putting their foot down against PEDs @SportsCenter and @ESPN looks like more headlines on horizon. #playitclean," Cena tweeted on Tuesday, later adding that he is "lifetime drug free" before posting a picture of himself working out.

Braun was the first to fall due to his connection to the Biogenesis clinic in Miami, and 15-20 more players are expected to be punished by MLB.

Cena used the hash tag #playitclean three different times on Tuesday, tweeting that the best action is no action because no one should be cheating by using PEDs.

While MLB has been in a lot of turmoil with PEDs for over a decade, the WWE has had to grapple with their own set of problems with steroids. The steroid scandals in wrestling date back to the 1980s when the FBI raided the office of a doctor who was employed from the WWE and found evidence of steroid shipments.

WWE chairman Vince McMahon was embroiled in Congressional hearings as a result and the WWE was put in a negative spotlight. Accusations flew that McMahon had sold steroids to his wrestlers and made his superstars take them, but in 1994 all the charges against McMahon were dropped.

While there are many reasons to believe wrestlers take steroids due to their physiques, it's not hard to believe that John Cena is telling the truth about being clean since the WWE initiated its own wellness policy following the deaths of former WWE Superstars Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit. Many stars, including Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio, have been suspended for violating this policy, but John Cena never has.

While WWE was once the center of attention for a steroid scandal, the eyes of John Cena and the public now look to the MLB as more suspensions are expected to be handed out.

"Remember ladies and gents 'there is NO substitute for hard work!'," Cena tweeted Tuesday.
