Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez's tenure at Real Madrid has been an unmitigated disaster. The 26-year-old has only made one league start since joining from Manchester United on loan, amassing a putrid 199 minutes.
Though he boasts three goals, not a single one came at a meaningful moment.
Given the evidence against him, it should come as no surprise that Real Madrid have admitted that bringing Hernandez on loan was a mistake. According to Cadena COPE journalist Melchor Ruiz, a source close to the club has told him Madrid regret contracting the Mexican international.
"They [Real Madrid] acknowledge they could have been wrong about him after what he has contributed," Ruiz told the 'El Partido de las 12' programme (via Yahoo Sport). "It has not been good for the player how the season has gone. They also believe it wasn't necessary to sign him, as he has not had many minutes."
Real Madrid were linked to several potent strikers during the summer transfer window, including Radamel Falcao, but chose not to move forward to avoid disrupting the chemistry between Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema. With Hernandez soon to be out of the picture, a second option at striker must be identified.
According to Ruiz, that talent is one already in house.
"With regards to next season, there is no intention of bringing in a replacement," he added. "They think of Jese Rodriguez as first change for the attack. Although at the moment, he is far from at his best to play the role 'Chicharito' is occupying."
Real Madrid return to the pitch on Mar. 7 with a visit to Athletic Bilbao.
