Johnny Manziel checked himself into rehab earlier this week, and his progress figures to be the No. 1 storyline attached to the Cleveland Browns all offseason. Regardless of who is throwing passes for the Browns the bigger story might be who is going to be catching the football?
Wide receiver Josh Gordon is already suspended for at least the 2015 season following yet another flunked drug test, and now promising young tight end Jordan Cameron reportedly has "no interest" in re-upping for 2015.
Cameron battled injuries for almost the entire 2014 campaign, resulting in a final disappointing line of 24 catches, 424 yards and two touchdowns. The year before Cameron's athleticism shined-he hauled in 80 passes for 917 and seven scores. At 6'5, 244 pounds Cameron is a specimen at tight end with proven leaping ability. The injuries he suffered last season were compounded by dreadful quarterback play.
He spent last season catching passed from Brian Hoyer, who finished the season with 3,326 yards through the air, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Despite some early success for the team, Hoyer was pedestrian at best and when his play started trending down he was replaced by Manziel.
His first start was a dumpster fire. The Browns were shellacked 30-0 by the division rival Bengals, and Manziel went 10-of-18 for 80 yards and two interceptions. His scrambling prowess was non-existent, and he managed only 13 yards on the ground. His next start he was 3-of-8 before getting knocked out for the rest of the year.
It doesn't look as if Hoyer will be returning to the team either, and the premier free agent quarterback this offseason is Mark Sanchez.
On top of the quarterbacking mess, the absence of the team's best playmaker, and rumors that owner Jimmy Haslam is going to enact "sweeping changes" if 2015 doesn't go better than last year did.
