The New York Mets completed a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees Thursday night on the strength of Dillon Gee's 12 strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work, in what may very well be the high point of the Mets' season.
Entering the Subway Series, the Mets had shown some signs of life but were still hampered by pitching questions beyond the arm of ace Matt Harvey, and slumping starters teetering on the verge of trips to Triple A, chiefly first baseman Ike Davis.
This week, though, each starter turned in a good effort and Davis may have broken out of his catastrophic slump, posting two multi-hit games. Following their four consecutive wins over the hated Yankees, and a win in the third game of their previous series with the Atlanta Braves, the Mets are now riding a five-game winning streak.
Mets captain David Wright, who hit his first Citi Field home run of the season during the sweep talked after the game about what winning against the Yankees feels like. "It's always fun to win this series, especially for our fans. It gives our fans some bragging rights."
Mets manager Terry Collins was just glad to get a string of wins together, and said that it didn't matter what team they beat at this point in the year. "Does it mean any more that it's against the Yankees? Had we been playing better, yeah, it would have been huge. But right now we've just got to win some games, and it didn't matter who it was. It establishes a mood in the clubhouse that, you know what, we're not that bad."
The news was not all peachy for the blue and orange clad New York baseball club though. Shortstop Ruben Tejada was placed on the disabled list with a right quadriceps strain. Despite losing a starter, though, getting Tejada out of the lineup appeared to be under consideration with or without the injury.
Tejada was batting just .209 with no home runs, 10 RBI, and just two stolen bases and was considered a candidate for demotion to the minors if his play didn't improve.
