More news has come out regarding the backstage decision to add Seth Rollins to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at the Royal Rumble while Rusev has announced that he intends to enter the 30-man elimination match.
Triple H announced on RAW this week that due to his role in bringing back The Authority, Rollins was getting rewarded by putting Rollins into the match with Brock Lesnar and John Cena at the Royal Rumble to make it a Triple Threat Match.
According to Wrestlingheadlines.com, WWE officials have gone back and forth over whether or not to add Rollins to the bout at the Royal Rumble on Jan. 25 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
It was originally slated that Cena would battle Lesnar one-on-one and the WWE was billing it as the "Final Battle" and even sent out a video to promote the bout.
Lesnar, after ending The Streak of The Undertaker at WrestleMania, defeated Cena for the gold at SummerSlam in August. Cena then defeated Lesnar by DQ at Night of Champions in September after Rollins interfered.
The WWE set the stage for the two to battle one more time, but the company opted to throw Rollins into the mix to nix the plans rather than have the rubber match between Cena and Lesnar.
The WWE gave thought to leaving it Cena vs. Lesnar with the emphasis of the pay-per-view being one of them getting a clean win, but also considered adding Rollins to the match to make it a Triple Threat -- especially since the 30-man match is what sells the event.
The WWE opted to go with the latter choice as Rollins vs. Lesnar vs. Cena is a fresher matchup.
There is also talk of adding to the storyline the wrinkle that Lesnar will be upset over Rollins being added to the match, causing a rift between Lesnar and The Authority and putting Paul Heyman's loyalty to Lesnar in question due to his relationship with The Authority.
The belief is that Lesnar will escape Philadelphia with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship while Roman Reigns is expected to win the Royal Rumble Match and battle "The Beast" at the "Show of Shows."
Reigns and the returning Daniel Bryan were the only two Superstars announced for the Rumble over the last couple of weeks, but United States Champion Rusev also announced his intentions to enter the match on Tuesday night's Main Event.
Rusev is expected to battle Cena at WrestleMania 31, but it remains to be seen.
The Royal Rumble takes place live from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Jan. 25.
