7 Horses Test Positive: Godolphin Horses Have Steroids In System

The Godolphin organization is being racked with a doping scandal that involves seven horses, including last year's St. Leger-winning horse Encke. According to reports, 400 horses from Godolphin's group have been tested, seven of which came up positive for stanozolol.

The other six horses, Energizer, Improvisation, Steeler Zip Top, Genius Beat and Stamford. Trainer Mahmood al-Zarooni has been banned from racing for eight years due to his involvement in the scandal, although he is appealing the length of the punishment. There is no date set for Zarooni's appeal.

Saeed bin Suroor's stable of horses was found to be steroid-free, and according to The Examiner he will be given the license for Moulton Paddocks, where Zarooni's clean horses will be free to compete. The seven horses that tested positive will be banned from racing for six months, and can return on October 29th.

British Horseracing Authority chief executive Paul Bittar is quoted saying, "These test results endorse the swift action and measures taken by the BHA in this matter. Whatever the outcome of his appeal before the independent Appeal Board, the gravity and scale of the infringements warranted Mahmood Al Zarooni being removed from control of the yard as quickly as possible."
