John Cena, the WWE Heavyweight champion, battled Ryback for the belt in a Last Man Standing match at WWE Extreme Rules, in which a winner can only be declared after his opponent has been rendered unable to rise to his feet before a ten count.
Cena's bout with Ryback ended in a no contest, after Cena was speared through a wall near the staging area where the wrestlers' pyrotechnics shows occur. With rubble around them, the referee counted to ten; neither man was able to rise from the brutality before the count was complete, meaning Cena retained his belt via no contest.
Ryback eventually walked off under his own power, while Cena was fitted with a neck brace and carted off. The WWE has not made any comment on the condition of either wrestler, but according to WWE.com, Cena removed his neck brace and refused medical attention backstage.
During the broadcast, Jerry "The King" Lawler, a longtime WWE performer and announcer said, "We realize that it's the WWE Extreme Rules, which is the name of the Pay-per-view, but this time it has gone too far."
As for the rest of the card, Chris Jericho topped dancing machine Fandango by hitting him with a flying "Codebreaker," handing Fandango the first loss of his WWE career.
Dean Ambrose of The Shield defeated the high-flying, frenetic Kofi Kingston and took Kingston's United States Championship, the first time any member of The Shield has won a title in WWE.
In the third match, Sheamus, the Celtic warrior, bested the massive Mark Henry in a strap match, despite being outweighed by some 200 lbs.
Sheamus' win was followed by Alberto Del Rio retaining his World Heavyweight title against "The Real American" Jack Swagger. This match had a controversial ending; Swagger's cohort Zeb Colter threw in Del Rio's towel to make it look like the champ's corner had quit for him. Additional referees got involved, as did instant replay, and the match was restarted with Del Rio eventually winning.
The Tag Team titles changed hands as well during this pay-per-view, with The Shield's Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins beating Team Hell No, which consists of Kane and Daniel Bryan. After the Tag Team championship match Randy Orton took care of The Big Show in an extreme rules win in Orton's hometown of St. Louis.
Cena's brawl with Ryback came next, and then Brock Lesnar brought the house down with a vicious win over Triple H inside the confines of a steel cage.
