A trade between the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers involving cornerback Darrelle Revis appears imminent according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who reports that the Jets have given the Buccaneers permission to meet with Revis to facilitate a long-term extension and give him a physical.
This news comes after Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole reported that a deal has been agreed to between the two organizations that should be finalized either tonight, or by Monday morning. The Jets were reportedly seeking Tampa Bay's first-round pick in the trade, while Revis wants a long-term deal worth $14-16 million per season.
The Buccaneers had the worst pass defense in the NFL last season, and didn't do much to help that ranking by shipping their top cornerback, Aqib Talib, to the New England Patriots for a third-round draft pick. Adding a healthy Revis to any secondary marks a drastic, immediate improvement.
As for the Jets' end of the bargain, new general manager John Idzik would be mirroring the process the Seattle Seahawks went through during their rebuilding process during his time there. Idzik and Pete Carroll had two first-rounders in 2010, when they selected Russell Okung and Earl Thomas with the sixth and fourteenth picks. If the Jets snag Tampa Bay's first-round pick, the Jets would own the No. 9 and No. 13 selections.
Revis would join a secondary that includes impressive second-year strong safety Mark Barron and free agent strong safety Dashon Goldson. The top corner on the roster currently is seventh-year man Eric Wright, who played 10 games last season and recorded one interception, which he returned for a 60-yard touchdown.
If the Jets go through with this deal, they could be haunted by it very quickly. The Jets first opponent of the 2013 season is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who will be travelling to MetLife Stadium.
