While many Manchester United fans have expressed support to the club's acquisition of Argentine winger Angel Di Maria, one former United star says the team could have spent the money on a quality defender and defensive midfielder.
Ray Wilkins, a former Manchester United star and now television pundit, on Friday said the team wasted its money on Di Maria arguing his salary could have been used to acquire players that the club needs.
"They are putting the roof on before the foundations of the house," said Wilkins on the morning show Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast via Talksport.com, where he is a co-host. "I think they spent the £60million unwisely on Di Maria.
According to Wilkins, the team could have signed defender Mats Hummels and defensive midfielder Sami Khedira. He said: "Why don't they go and pay £35million for Hummels first? We know Dortmund, as good a side as they are, are a selling club. Take him out of Dortmund and put him in alongside Phil Jones."
He added the team could have offered £25 million to Khedira. "There's your £60million and you already look more solid."
Di Maria was acquired by Manchester United from Real Madrid last week for a British record transfer fee of £59.7 million. He was the man of the match when Real Madrid captured the Champions League in May. In 45 appearances in the La Liga and Champions league last season, he scored seven goals and made 22 assists.
But critics have pointed out that he is a bad fit for United, which is heavy in attackers but lacks a reliable presence on the defensive end.
