The Toronto Blue Jays picked up an 8-4 win over the Kansas City Royals Friday night, but an ankle injury sustained by shortstop Jose Reyes could cost the Blue Jays several wins down the road, based on his 4.2 wins above replacement according to Fangraphs.com.
In the top of the sixth inning Reyes was doing what he does best, stealing second base, when he badly sprained his left ankle and needed to be carted off the field. Reyes' timetable for a comeback is currently one to three months, but he could be out even longer. "If it's good news, you're looking at four weeks," Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "The other scenario could be three months, or if something comes up we're not expecting, it could be more than that."
The injury is weighing on the Blue Jays right now, said manager John Gibbons. "It's on everybody's mind. Doesn't matter if he's on our team or another team, in the baseball world -- the baseball community -- your heart goes out to whoever it might be. In this case, he's one of the top guys in the game."
Reyes was off to a very hot start before suffering his ankle sprain. Before leaving last night's game, Reyes was hitting .395, with a home run, five RBI, five runs scored and five stolen bases. He was also hitting the ball with authority, posting a .991 .OPS that includes two doubles and the homer.
Anthopoulos said the team will be able to stay afloat despite losing such a high-end talent. "Jose is great. He's a big part of this team. I can't emphasize that enough. Every team goes through these things. I don't believe we're a team built on one player, no matter how great a player it is. Just continue to move forward."
