Tonight at 6:00 p.m. ET the weigh in for Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara will take place, and can be live streamed free by clicking this link. The highly anticipated bout will be the culmination of an intense and contentious build up mostly driven by Lara.
At Thursday's final press conference Lara was more tame, appearing focused, but he still bragged about how his amateur pedigree would allow him to tame the powerful Alvarez.
"The Cuban school is the best school in boxing. You see the Olympics, the World Championships, the Pan-American Games ... Cubans win the most medals. That's shown throughout history," Lara said.
He also said he's unfazed by the size advantage Canelo possesses over him. "I'm not worried about that," Lara said. "Every fighter I've fought has been heavier than me and I've been able to deal with them. Everyone goes into the ring how they feel comfortable. I have no problem with him blowing up to whatever he wants."
Style-wise the fight will be intriguing, as both fighters have struggled against a common opponent and dominated the other. Lara fought tooth-and-nail with Alfredo Angulo, who floored him twice before quitting due to a broken bone in his eye, while Canelo annihilated him.
Alvarez struggled against southpaw Austin Trout on the other hand, while Lara outclassed him for an easy unanimous decision. Lara had an answer for that one too, claiming his fight with Angulo sapped him of his usual strength and tenacity.
"He [Angulo] lost a lot in our last fight. He took a ton of punishment, and I think it showed when he fought Canelo," Lara said. "That wasn't the same Angulo as the Angulo I fought."
