Tonight at 7:10 p.m. ET, the Philadelphia Phillies (24-34) and Cincinnati Reds (27-31) clash at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati for the first contest in a three-game set. Philadelphia has lost six games in a row and continues a six-game road trip it is 0-3 on while Cincinnati continues a 10-game homestand that it is 1-2 on thus far. The Phillies enter in last place in the NL East while the Reds are in fourth place in the NL Central.
Cole Hamels (1-3, 4.01 ERA) mans the mound for the Phillies while the Reds counter with Johnny Cueto, who is 5-4 with an MLB-best 1.68 ERA.
Aside from leading the league in ERA, Cueto also leads in opponents' batting average (.151) and complete games (tied with three). He's second in innings pitched (91) and strikeouts (92).
Cueto lasted 7.1 innings last time out against the Arizona Diamondbacks while allowing five hits and striking out seven batters.
"Another excellent performance," manager Bryan Price told MLB.com. "We've won some series but we haven't really peeled off a long winning streak, which would really help us right now. It was nice to see him go out there and pitch well and also get the victory."
Hamels is 8-0 all-time against the Reds and is coming off of a defeat against the Mets where he allowed two runs (one earned) in seven innings.
"I mean, he gives us the opportunity," manager Ryne Sandberg said per MLB.com. "No question about it."
Phillies second baseman Chase Utley is hitting ..311 with four homers and 28 RBIs and ranks tied for first in the MLB with 23 doubles.
Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton is second in the league with 22 stolen bases.
