The Phoenix Suns have made their decision on the next head coach for the 2024-25 season.
The team has chosen Mike Budenholzer, formerly the coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, from 2018 to 2023.
This decision certainly comes at a price, as the 54-year-old tactician will sign a lucrative five-year deal worth more than $50 million to take over the team, according to league insider Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
Budenholzer won an NBA championship with the Bucks in 2021, ironically defeating the Suns in that year's NBA Finals. He was an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs from 1996 to 2013 before landing his first NBA coaching job with the Atlanta Hawks from 2013 to 2018.
Born and raised in Holbrook, Arizona, approximately 185 miles and a three-hour drive northeast of Phoenix, Budenholzer's roots in the state might have influenced his decision to coach the Suns.
Suns take hard financial hit with new coach
The financial obligations for the Suns extend beyond paying for Budenholzer's new contract.
When he took over as head coach last summer, former head coach Frank Vogel had signed a five-year deal worth $31 million.
Although the specific terms of the contract are unclear, in the event of a firing, NBA coaches typically continue to receive payment according to the terms of their contract until they secure a new head coaching job.
