The Charlotte Hornets have concluded their search for a new head coach, and Charles Lee has emerged as their choice.

Lee currently serves as the lead assistant coach for the Boston Celtics during the 2023-24 season, having held similar roles for the past decade with both the Atlanta Hawks and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla addressed the media before Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday, May 9. He was asked about his thoughts on the hiring and offered advice as Lee transitions into the Hornets' head coaching role.

"Happy for him. Great coach. Long overdue, and he's going to do a great job... Everybody hates you. Get used to it. You're no longer the nice, shiny toy," the 35-year-old tactician told the media.

Lee has inked a four-year agreement to become the next coach of the Charlotte Hornets. He will officially join the team once the Celtics conclude their ongoing playoff campaign.

Charles Lee's coaching history

Lee has been a part of Mike Budenholzer's coaching staff for almost all of his NBA coaching career.

He began as an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks, following the 54-year-old coach when he moved to Milwaukee in 2018.

The 39-year-old continued with the Bucks until Budenholzer's departure from the team in the summer of 2023. He was part of the team's coaching staff when they won the 2021 NBA Championship.

Subsequently, Lee secured a position as the lead assistant coach with the Celtics for the 2023-24 season.
