As the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks scramble to find their team's next head coach, the Minnesota Timberwolves are close to finding their guy. Minnesota is making “significant progress” toward signing Dave Joerger away from the Memphis Grizzlies.
According to ESPN, the Grizzlies will receive some kind of compensation for Joerger, but are moving forward as if he was already signed to the Timberwolves. The news of Joerger jumping ship is not a surprise seeing as how the Grizzlies are rumored to be on the verge of a huge overhaul from the top to the bottom. The Grizzlies gave Minnesota permission to speak to Joerger earlier in the week and talks have moved fast.
Reports: Timberwolves closing in on hiring Dave Joerger as coach; Hollins, Mitchell also in mix https://t.co/sl255lMgdq — Kurt Helin (@basketballtalk) May 22, 2014
While Memphis' Dave Joerger situation remains unresolved, I'm told the Grizzlies haven't reached out to Lionel Hollins about possible return — Sam Amick (@sam_amick) May 22, 2014
From the Timberwolves point of view, this has to be considered a huge get. Joerger is coming off a season where the Grizzlies went 50-32 and made the postseason, something the Timberwolves can only hope to match. The Timberwolves are moving fast, but it is unknown what the possible hiring would do for Kevin Love’s status in Minnesota. If Minnesota signs away Joerger, look for the Grizzlies to push hard to bring Lionel Hollins back to Memphis.
