Former Indiana guard Yogi Ferrell is back on the free agent market after spurning his agreement with the Dallas Mavericks.
Ferrell reportedly agreed to return to the Mavericks after reaching a two-year agreement worth $5.3 million. According to Ferrell's agent, Cervando Tejeda, they will weigh their options first before making a final decision. Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania reported that the contract Ferrell agreed with the Mavericks had a trigger date of July 7, 2019, for the second year.
"We felt uncomfortable and will weigh our options," Tejeda said.
The Mavericks rescinded their qualifying offer to Ferrell earlier this month thus making him an unrestricted free agent. However, ESPN's Tim McMahon said that the move was just a formality as the Mavericks and Ferrell were in the last stages of working out a new deal.
The 25-year-old Ferrell was destined to play the backup shooting guard role for the Mavericks at the start of the 2018-19 season. Among the players that will play in the backcourt for the Mavericks next season is Wesley Matthews, Dennis Smith Jr., and rookie Luka Doncic.
Ferrell Draws Interest From NBA Teams
After backing out from his reported agreement with the Mavericks, Ferrell has now caught the attention of the New Orleans Pelicans and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Ferrell has proven to be a great role player for the Mavericks, averaging 10.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per contest in the 2017-18 season.
Ferrell started his career with the Brooklyn Nets and the Long Island Nets in the G League. He played 10 games as a rookie for Brooklyn before finishing his freshmen year in the league with Dallas.
The former Nets guard joined the Mavericks in the middle of the 2016-17 season after signing a 10-day contract. Ferrell started 21 of his 82 games played for the Mavericks. He exploded for 32 points, courtesy of nine three-pointers against the Portland Trail Blazers on Feb. 3, 2017.
Not The First Time For Dallas
It wasn't the first time that a free agent dismissed an agreement with the Mavericks. It can be brought to mind that DeAndre Jordan agreed on a deal with the Mavericks a few summers back before deciding to back out to return to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Jordan's decision to back out in the deal gave rise to numerous emojis and even rumors that Mark Cuban was dying to get in touch with the former LA Clipper big man. Nonetheless, the Mavericks were able to get Jordan after signing him earlier this summer.
