Veteran guard Deron Williams was waived by the Dallas Mavericks during the last day of the NBA trade deadline. With the Mavs waiving him, could this be the opportunity that the Cavs is looking for in their search for a point guard?

Reports from SB Nation mentioned that the departure was done through a negotiation as the 32-year old Williams is determined to join the defending champions. Picked 3rd overall in the 2005 draft by Utah Jazz, Williams is definitely answering Cleveland's call for a playmaker.

Once considered as the top point guard in the league, Williams established himself as one of the best passers in the league. In fact, he is the Mavs' leader in assists with 6.9 dimes in total 40 games with the 2010-2011 NBA champs.

The 6-foot-3 guard from University of Illinois blossomed during his tenure with the Jazz. As the team's main playmaker, he averaged 9.1 assists per game in his first 5 seasons with Utah, finding success in pick and roll plays with forward Carlos Boozer.

With the Mavericks signing Yogi Ferrell to a two-year extension, the battle for playing time in the point guard position will be a hard thing to establish. With the emergence of the undrafted Ferrell and Seth Curry, the team also have old reliables JJ barea and Devin Harris fighting for the position.

Now with his sights set in joining LeBron James in Cleveland, Williams will now have a huge chance of putting his hands on an NBA championship. The Cavaliers is currently on top of the Eastern Conference with 40-16 in contrast with the Mavericks' 22-34, good for 12th place In the Western conference.

If the negotiations between Williams and Cleveland pushes through, Williams will be sharing playmaking chores with all-star Kyrie Irving. The 11-year veteran is holding career averages of 16.6 points, 3.1 boards, 8,2 assists and 1 steal in 821 total games.
