The Detroit Tigers revealed on Wednesday that they have fired pitching mentor Chris Bosio after breaching team policy and his employment contract.
Al Avila, Tigers general manager, said that Bosio was discharged from his position after making racial comments toward a team employee. Bullpen coach Rick Anderson will replace Bosio, while AJ Sager will become the new bullpen mentor.
Jeff Pico To Replace Pitching Coach Chris Bosio
Sager, who previously handled the roving pitching duties of the squad, will be replaced by Jeff Pico.
"He definitely was a good pitching coach," said Avila when asked about the performance of Bosio.
The 55-year-old Bosio who also competed as a pitcher in the major leagues during his playing career also served a pitching coach for the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs did not renew his contract last season after it signed Jim Hickey to replace Bosio.
In his 11-year career, Bosio had a 94-93 over starting for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Seattle Mariners where he notably unleashed a no-hitter in a game against the Boston Red Sox in 1993. His pitching expertise greatly benefited the Cubs as the team accumulated the lowest ERA in the major leagues from 2015 to 2017. Bosio also helped the team capture the 2015 World Series and compete in the 2017 NL Championship series.
Prior to joining the Cubs, Bosio also became the pitching coach of the Tampa Bay Ray star Lou Piniella. He also worked as a scout for the Brewers before eventually becoming a pitching coach, nine years ago.
Can The Tigers Turn Their Fortunes Around?
The Tigers has been a laughing stock for the most part of the season after winning just 36 of their 81 total games this season. Detroit is currently on a seven-game losing skid after suffering an agonizing 3-0 defeat over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. The Athletics have also defeated the Tigers 5-4 last Monday and 9-7 on Tuesday.
Detroit will have a chance to get back at the Athletics when both teams square up this Thursday. The Tigers will be traveling to Canada thereafter to take on the Toronto Blue Jays starting on Friday.
The Tigers are currently sitting in the 11th spot of the American League with a 36-45 win-loss record, which is 18 games back of the conference leader Boston which sports a 54-27 slate. Following closely to the Red Sox are the New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Athletics, and the Los Angeles Angels. Completing the top 11 are the Rays, the Blue Jays, and the Minnesota Twins.
