Travis Kelce and his big brother, Jason Kelce are now leaders of the NFL but their roots can still be discovered in a small town in Ohio, an area that keeps showing their more unsavory college aspects. The brothers grew up in the Cleveland suburbs and played football at the University of Cincinnati but that wasn't all that defined the twins.
The Calamitous College Living Situation of the Kelce Brothers
The Kelce brothers- living up to their rowdy reputations as they studied and played football at Cincinnati -made it anything but neat in their living quarters, notes Greg Davis, whose son Evan once shared a dorm room with future NFL stars like them.
"Those guys were absolute pigs," he recalled, exclusively in January 2024, in an interview with The Athletic. According to him, they had this giant outdoor garbage can in the common area, and it was piled two feet above the rim with pizza boxes.
Jason and Travis Kelce didn't deny these claims. Over on their podcast New Heights-a play on their high school alma mater-they just chuckled about it all.
Jason said, "They really made us out like degenerates, but yeah." Travis jumped in, saying if a college footballer isn't doing anything crazy, then someone is doing college wrong.
Travis Kelce's Suspension for Cannabis
Travis Kelce's off-field shenanigans are as brief as his on-field passion. However, in 2010, the rowdy tight end's college career came to an early unfortunate end when he was suspended from the entire season after a raid that saw him caught smoking marijuana. The act has infringed academic and athletic rules at the University of Cincinnati.
Just after his suspension, there was another encounter with trouble when one of Travis' former roommates Zach Collaros made a hilarious story about Kelce's laid-back attitude.
"Zach's mother caught him smoking a joint in their basement after the suspension. She asked, 'Travis, aren't you suspended for this?' He just laughed and said, 'It's all right, Momma Collaros. When are we going to the game?' The two then walked to the game together.
Kelce Carried the Consequences of His Actions
According to Sportskeeda, Travis Kelce's suspension and college antics not only hurt his reputation but also affected his draft into the NFL. During the 2013 NFL Draft, Kelce was chosen as the 63rd overall draft pick by the Kansas City Chiefs during the third round.
Although he is very talented, the off-field antics made his stock plummet, but Kelce has changed that to become one of the best tight ends in the NFL ever.
From pizza boxes to wild party animal antics, the college days of the Kelce brothers could not be further from reality compared to today's professional glory, yet the past adds an unforgettable chapter to their rise to stardom.
