The Minnesota Vikings face an intriguing quarterback situation as they head into their annual training camp to prepare for the 2024 NFL season.

Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell addressed the media on Wednesday, June 12, the second day of the team's mandatory minicamp, offering insights into the team's quarterback situation heading into training camp.

The 39-year-old tactician admitted that they haven't made a depth chart for the position so far, but they are leaning towards creating a new signing with veteran Sam Darnold as the starting quarterback in training camp over lottery draft pick JJ McCarthy.

"I would say Sam would be the guy I would look to based upon the spring he's had, and really where he's at in his career and his quarterback journey," O'Connell said.

O'Connell signed a one-year deal with the Vikings last March after spending the 2023 season with the San Francisco 49ers as a backup to Brock Purdy, appearing in 11 games.

O'Connell pointed out Darnold's experience in taking advantage of competitive situations, having served as a backup and a starter throughout his career.

The Vikings selected McCarthy with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The 21-year-old was the signal-caller of the Michigan Wolverines team that won the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship last January.
