Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was roasted by fans all over social media after they noticed his bulkier physique as the team began their organized team activities this month.

However, retired quarterback Matt Ryan came to the reigning Super Bowl MVP's defense, stating that a bulkier body does not necessarily mean a drop-off in performance, noting his similar build.

"I had a dad bod for most of my career so I agree with Patrick on that... the proof is in the performance," the 39-year-old told Mail Sport at the Sports Business Awards in New York City on Wednesday, May 22.

Ryan, who won the NFL Most Valuable Player and NFL Offensive Player of the Year awards in 2016 with the Atlanta Falcons, says that Mahomes' resume speaks for itself, no matter what his body looks like.

"His performance has been better than anybody's the last five or six years, so I think he's doing okay," the four-time Pro Bowl selection added.

Patrick Mahomes defends his dad bod

Despite his "dad bod" gaining much attention over the past offseason, Mahomes has defended his physique, stating last month that it could be useful in in-game situations.

"I definitely have the dad bod a little bit. I'll also say I have a great body for a quarterback. You've got to have some padding in there to take the hits that we take," the three-time Super Bowl champion told TIME magazine last April.

Mahomes and the Chiefs aim to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls in the 2024 NFL season.
