The Detroit Lions are rewarding quarterback Jared Goff with a lucrative contract following their impressive 2023 season.
The 29-year-old is set to ink a four-year extension valued at $212 million, securing his tenure with the franchise until the end of the 2028 season.
This agreement includes a guaranteed sum of $170 million, and it also makes Goff the highest-paid player in Lions franchise history, according to league insider Adam Schefter of ESPN.
In the 2023 regular season, Goff boasted a passer rating of 97.9 while throwing for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 17 games.
After a prolonged drought, the team savored a taste of success, clinching the NFC North Division title for the first time since 1991.
Additionally, they made it to the NFC Championship for the first time since 1993, narrowly missing a berth at Super Bowl 58 after losing to the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31.
Lions did not want any complications regarding Jared Goff's contract situation
With Goff's contract set to expire after the 2024 season, the Lions were keen to avoid any potential contract negotiations or free agency distractions.
Goff's new deal currently positions him as the second-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL in terms of average annual salary with $53 million, trailing only behind Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, who earns an average of $55 million annually.
This offseason, Detroit has demonstrated its commitment to key players by awarding contract extensions totaling over $444 million. These extensions include deals for Goff, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, and offensive tackle Penei Sewell.
