Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has resolved his jersey number situation for his debut season in the league.

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner, chosen as the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has worn jersey number 5 since high school.

However, veteran Commanders punter Tress Way, a mainstay on the team since 2014, has donned the same number for the past decade.

In a graceful gesture, Way willingly relinquished the number to the quarterback on a video posted on the team's account on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, May 9.

Daniels has worn jersey number 5 since his high school days at Cajon High School in San Bernardino, continuing through his college football career with the Arizona State Sun Devils and LSU Tigers.

Way declined any cash transaction from Daniels for the No. 5 jersey. Instead, Daniels plans to show his gratitude by arranging for Way and his family to attend an Oklahoma-LSU football game, likely with premium seats.

The 34-year-old Way was more than happy to surrender his jersey number to the team as a small part of the franchise's rejuvenation process.

"I just feel like there's just so much excitement around this organization, hands down the most I have ever seen. All of the excitement [is] building and building and building. I just feel like this is...a very small part that I could do," Way said on the latest episode of Command Center, an ongoing series on the team's YouTube channel.

Way was recognized as a second-team All-Pro selection in 2019 and earned Pro Bowl honors in 2019 and 2022.
