One of the New York Mets jobs that needs to be filled soon is the managerial position vacated by Buck Showalter. The Mets may have a plausible replacement in the person of Milwaukee Brewers team manager Craig Counsell.
The Mets are reportedly high on Counsell, whose contract expires at the end of this MLB season, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported.
Critics believe that targeting Counsell makes plenty of sense for the Mets. Further, it is not the first time that both parties have been linked, considering there is a big question mark on whether the Brewers can afford to keep the 53-year-old manager.
However, the fact that Counsell deferred contract extension talks last spring has sent different signals. According to an unnamed source connected with the Brewers, it may all boil down to how much the Brewers can offer to the two-time World Series champion.
Mets have work to do
The Mets will have their work cut out for them as they fill in crucial voids. They recently hired David Stearns as their new President of Baseball Operations, and the 38-year-old executive will have plenty of work to do, ESPN reported.
Among them is finding a Buck Showalter replacement after the 67-year-old was fired as New York Mets manager last October 1 following a disappointing season despite spending heftily in the summer, NBC Sports reported.
A potential stop for Showalter is the Los Angeles Angels. The Halos reportedly prefer a veteran manager to lead their young team, and there is no doubt that the four-time Manager of the Year fits that role.
