New York Jets coach Robert Saleh changed his stance on quarterback Zach Wilson's performance after initially defending the 24-year-old play-caller.

The second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft has struggled to fill the big shoes of Aaron Rodgers, who was forced out early this season due to an Achilles tendon injury. The Jets have lost two consecutive games since then.

After initially defending him, Saleh is now changing his tune on Wilson.

"We all acknowledge he has to play better," Saleh said via the New York Post on Wednesday, September 27. "We all acknowledge that. He acknowledges that. Teammates acknowledge it. He acknowledges it himself."

It was an entirely different take from the embattled Jets coach who had stood up for Wilson on Monday following their loss to the New England Patriots, 15-10.

That loss sparked violent reactions from Jets' supporters, including NFL legend Joe Namath.

"I don't believe he has a future as a good player and I think they made a wrong choice when they drafted him. I feel that way. He has some athletic ability, but you gotta have something up here that's going on whenever you're studying, reading, playing out there," Namath said about Wilson via USA Today.

Jets bring in Sieman

Aware that they have a gaping hole at the quarterback position, the Jets signed NFL veteran Trevor Sieman to their practice squad on Tuesday, September 26, Fox News reported. He will join the QB rotation that includes Wilson and Tim Boyle.

Heading into the Jets' upcoming Week 4 showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs, Saleh confirmed that Zach Wilson will stay on as their starter. However, another loss could force Saleh's hand to make play-calling changes moving forward.
