The Los Angeles Chargers are hurting, with their receiving corps taking a huge hit. However, head coach Brandon Staley is not losing hope and remains upbeat.

The Chargers hope to fill a huge void following the loss of Mike Williams due to a season-ending ACL tear. And one person who can try and fill that void is highly-touted rookie Quenton Johnston.

The rookie first-rounder has shown flashes of brilliance despite not being given the proper playing time. That will change soon, per Chargers coach Brandon Staley via NFL.com.

"Now, he is going to get a bigger opportunity because there are going to be more opportunities available for him. It's a great chance for him to step up, and for everyone around him, too, as well. This is going to be an important transition for us, offensively," Staley stated.

Johnston was the 21st pick of the 2023 NFL Draft and has produced five receptions on eight targets from 48 snaps in the Chargers' three games.

Staley has high Johnston expectations

As far as Staley is concerned, the lack of playing time that the 22-year-old is getting is because of the talent ahead of him. That narrative has now changed.

"We believe in the makeup of this guy, and now he's going to get a bigger opportunity because there are going to be more opportunities available for him," Staley said via ESPN. "So it's a great chance for him to step up."

Touted as one of the best receivers in the recent NFL Draft, Staley described the 6-foot-3 player as a weapon to score the ball whenever he touches it.

Although he showed it in college, Johnston has yet to prove that in the NFL. He now gets that chance to change all that with the new opportunity in front of him.
