St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson is set to undergo surgery for his injured left ankle and will be out for two to three months.
This was shared with reporters by Cardinals skipper Oli Marmol and Derrick Gold in a report by the St. Louis Dispatch. Barring any unfortunate setback, the 24-year-old is expected to be ready once Spring Training starts.
The medical procedure hardly comes as a surprise since Carlson had been considering surgery as early as August. He hurt his ankle in May, a setback that forced him to the sidelines for about a month, CBS Sports reported.
Aside from that, the California native had also been dealing with bone spurs.
Carlson was initially viewed as a top prospect but has hardly lived up to the hype. The best performance he has turned in so far was during the 2021-22 MLB season, where he averaged .253/.331/.412 slash in over 1100 trips.
Regardless, the 24-year-old still managed to put up strong ratings a year ago. Carlson had his share of interest from MLB teams, but the Cards wanted a package that involved a young MLB-ready pitcher, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported.
One team who inquired about Carlson was the New York Yankees, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic back in August.
Carlson trade makes sense for Cardinals
Once he returns, MLB teams are expected to monitor how well Carlson has returned from his medical procedure. If he performs well, the St. Louis Cardinals will likely get calls about the 24-year-old player anew.
Dealing away Carlson makes sense for the Cardinals since this would free up the logjam in the outfield rotation, SI.com suggested.
