Yu Darvish of the San Diego Padres is officially done for the 2022-23 MLB season due to an elbow injury.
Padres team manager Bob Melvin revealed this on Tuesday, September 12, after tests showed he had a bone spur in his elbow, according to Padres beat reporter AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
Darvish has not pitched since August 25. He continued to experience irritation while playing catch from about 90 feet. The 37-year-old opted to stop throwing, worried about possibly incurring a stress fracture.
"Some players go out there and throw with a stress reaction," Darvish said through his interpreter. "I tried to throw, and it just didn't go the way that we wanted."
Hence, the Japanese pitcher ends his season after going 8-10 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 141 strikeouts in 136.1 innings across 24 starts for the Padres, per Bleacher Report.
San Diego is eight games back from the National League wild-card spot with a 68-77 record.
Summing it all up, it is hardly surprising that Darvish is pretty unhappy at how his season went after signing a six-year $108 million contract with the Padres back in February, ESPN reported.
"Pitching is my job; that's how I get paid. To not be able to do that, to not be able to get on the mound and pitch, there is a lot of frustration," the 2020 NL wins leader rued.
Darvish may not be the only player that the Padres may preserve. There is also Joe Musgrove, who is trying to work his way back from an inflammation in his right shoulder capsule.
San Diego reportedly had plans to bring back Musgrove in late September, but only if they were in contention. Considering their current predicament, the 30-year-old is also more likely to be shut down.
