The New York Mets will attempt to bounce back from a disappointing season by making a big front-office move.

The team has hired well-respected executive David Stearns, who is currently in an advisory role for the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Mets are currently in the midst of a dismal campaign after starting the year assembling the highest payroll in MLB history at $344 million.

Stearns will officially begin his tenure with the Mets in October, signing a five-year deal.

The incoming Mets president is a New York native who grew up as a fan of the team, and he was rumored to take over the Mets' top baseball operations job in 2021, but the Brewers denied him permission to speak with the team.

David Stearns led the Brewers to their most successful span

The dynamic 38-year-old executive started serving the Brewers as their general manager in 2015, leading them to their most successful stretch in franchise history, making the playoffs in four seasons from 2018 to 2021 and winning the National League Central Division twice in that span.

In 2019, Stearns was promoted to president of baseball operations while keeping his general manager post after signing a contract extension in Milwaukee. Matt Arnold became the team's GM in 2020.

Stearns stepped down as general manager in October 2022 after the Brewers missed the playoffs, but he remained with the team in an advisory capacity.
