Aaron Rodgers's injury in his initial game for the New York Jets was serious, as many feared. The 39-year-old quarterback reportedly tore his Achilles tendon in his maiden appearance against the Buffalo Bills in their Week 1 matchup and is done for the season.
The four-time NFL MVP suffered the injury during the fourth play of the Jets' opening game. This was when Aaron Rodgers got sacked by pass rusher Leonard Floyd of the Bills on a first-and-10 with 11:40 remaining in the first quarter.
Rodgers still managed to get up but ultimately went down again after the play, footage of which was captured by ESPN.
Rodgers was helped out of the field, and Jets coach Robert Saleh feared for the worst. Before learning the extent of the injury, the 44-year-old was already worried Aaron Rodgers's injury was tied to his Achilles.
"It's not good," the Jets coach said.
It turns out that Saleh's fears were correct.
Following an MRI, it was found that Rodgers had torn his Achilles tending, an injury that abruptly ended his 2023-24 NFL season, NFL Insider Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported.
"I feel more for Aaron than anyone," Saleh told reporters via NBC News. "He's invested so much into this organization, so much into this journey that he's embarked on."
This means that the Jets will have to ride on the shoulders of Zach Wilson for the rest of the current NFL season. However, the loss of Rodgers placed a huge dent in the Jets' chances of making the playoffs and the Super Bowl, per SportsLine's projections.
Aaron Rodgers' NFL future hangs
The unfortunate injury also raises questions about what lies next for the Super Bowl XLV MVP. As far as Saleh is concerned, he will let Aaron Rodgers address that in due time.
"As you guys could imagine, he's down. I'll let him answer those questions. I did not get into the future of what he's expecting or what he's thinking," Saleh stated.
