New York Yankees rookie outfielder Jasson Dominguez has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) on his right throwing elbow. The injury will require Tommy John surgery, causing him to miss the rest of the 2023 MLB season.
"Definitely very shocking news. You're never expecting for this to be the result," Domínguez said in Spanish via an interpreter.
The 20-year-old first experienced discomfort during a September 3 game against the Houston Astros but could not recall how he picked up the injury.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone expects the Dominican to be out for nine to ten months, which will also cause him to miss a significant portion of the 2024 season.
Dominguez plans to go through surgery and rehabilitation as soon as possible.

Dominguez made his MLB debut recently
The setback is the latest development during the Yankees' disastrous season.
Dominguez just made his debut in the major leagues less than two weeks ago against the Astros on September 1, and he has been hitting .258 with four home runs and seven RBIs in eight games so far.
"Crushed for him. At the same time, he's a young man and these things resolve themselves, so it's a moment in time in the grand scheme of things in what we feel like has a chance to be a long, excellent career. So it's about taking care of it now," Boone said about the recent debutant.
