The Dallas Mavericks are interested in acquiring Boston Celtics power forward Grant Williams to boost their frontcourt, USA TODAY NBA insider Michael Scotto initially reported a few days ago.

Williams is set to become a restricted free agent this offseason, meaning that Boston can match any offer he receives to keep him in the team for an additional four years.

On the other hand, the Celtics have the option to sign the player and trade him to another team.

The Mavericks have now spoken to the Celtics in hopes of adding the 6-foot-6 forward via a sign-and-trade deal, according to Tim Cato of The Athletic. However, Dallas is not keen on using its number 10 pick in the upcoming draft to get him.

Instead, they might offer something above the mid-level exception, which could be big enough that Boston wouldn't match.

Grant Williams Saw Reduced Role in 2023 Playoffs

Williams was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 2019 draft using the 22nd overall pick.

He was an exceptional role player for the Celtics during the 2022 postseason, which saw the team make it to the Finals. He played in all 24 games of last year's playoffs, averaging career playoff highs of 8.6 points and 3.8 rebounds.

Williams notably had a big game during Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Semifinals match-up against then-defending champions Milwaukee Bucks, where he dropped 27 points, including seven three-pointers and six rebounds.

However, in this year's playoffs, Williams missed five of the Celtics' 20 playoff games due to the coach's decision. His production dropped to 5.1 points and 2.2 rebounds.
