The New York Knicks have re-committed to the triangle offense – a concept that has been a contentious subject for both fans and players since Phil Jackson took over the team. Recently, Derrick Rose sounded off on the triangle, and to be blunt, he didn’t seem too enthused.
“S---, do I have a choice?” Derrick Rose said when asked how he felt about running the triangle. After starting the system trying to blend coach Jeff Hornacek’s own system with the triangle, the New York Knicks have reverted back to the latter since the All-Star break. Rose admitted that he has yet to get a feel for the entire offense, but said that he considers himself a great player, and great players find a way to learn.
As noted by Bleacher Report, despite the team’s and the former MVP’s admitted struggles, Derrick Rose has been having his best season by win shares (1.9) since the 2011-12 season, while averaging 17.6 points and 4.4 assists per game. ESPN points out that earlier in the week, Jeff Hornacek said that players will be evaluated at the end of the season based on their ability to adapt to the triangle. Rose is set to be a free agent at the end of the season
“You think, ‘Don’t F up the game,’ that’s a great way to put it—just don’t mess up the game, and looking at a lot of film, you learn,” Derrick Rose said of the offense. For his part, Kristaps Porzingis – seen as the future of the New York Knicks’ franchise – has said that he likes the triangle, but said that it can only work if everybody believes in it and executes it the right way.
Derrick Rose found himself in trade rumors before the recent trade deadline. Reports floated around that his former coach Tom Thibodeau was looking for potential deals to get him to Minnesota.
