The Nintendo Switch is the weirdest gaming console to hit the market since the last console of Nintendo got released. When the switch docked to the TV, the slim black device could well be mistaken for one of the previous consoles, but it shouldn't be.
The "Joy-Con" controllers giveaway the feeling that something is good, though even in their most traditional configuration, clicked into a mounting device to be used as a classic dual-analogue-stick-handset. But once the Joy-Con get unclipped, the full rationale of the thing becomes clear. The Nintendo Switch controllers clip into the side of the 6 inch touchscreen, so as a result the game just keeps on working and whole systems becomes portable.
To a degree of extent it's an evolution that was laid at the heart of Wii U, which was oriented around the gamepad. Wii U was a bulky wireless controller with a touchscreen at the centre, that can be used as second screens for some games. The idea was good but failed to catch customer's imagination, but there are similarities between Wii U and the Nintendo Switch. The Switch when undocked and used in its portable mode, looks like a sleak upgrade to the 2012 console's controller.
So, now the question is whether the Nintendo Switch is just an evolution of the Wii U or is it taking a different pathway to allure the customers? It's the product of the company applying all the knowledge that they've built up over the years of designing hardware systems, and putting that into one device, claims the director and general manager at Nintendo's entertainment planning and development division Shinya Takahashi.
Takahashi's deputy is Yoshiaki Koizumi, the general producer of the Nintendo Switch. When he was asked about the difference between the Switch and the Wii U, he pointed out that the Switch began with two controllers. Koizumi backs this point by turning up to one of the system's two first-party launch games.
Most notably, the significant chunk of the games in Switch can be played without even looking at the screen, instead users can rely on audio clues from speaker and vibration from the controller. It's a shame that 1-2 Switch game breaks up with another trend of Nintendo's recent past, coming in as a separate purchase.
Lack of bundled game adds to the already high cost of the Nintendo Switch which is launching at £279.99 being the most expensive Nintendo console in a long time. Adding the cost of 1-2 Switch game of around $49.99 will take the cost above to that of the premium edition of Wii U, which by the way launched at £300.
The cost is mainly the part of reason that, although the Nintendo Switch is being positioned as a hybrid console, the 3DS, Nintendo's previous portable console, is sticking around. The Switch isn't a necessarily a successor of previous versions though, claims Takahashi.
The Nintendo Switch is for a broader audience with wide range, the hardware is designed to be flexible covering every angle of the case. The pair of launch games, Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2 Switch, are also looked at, says Takahashi. In general terms, the Switch provides a broader and expansive experience for the hardcore and a more casual experience for the ones who came to Nintendo around the time of Wii U launch.
