According to recent reports from NBA, Lakers have brought back Magic Johnson in a new front office advisory role. The question is whether this is the real deal or just another thing happening around the Lakers and the NBA.

This is possible a move of Jim Buss, the Lakers VP of basketball ops and the brother of Jeanie Buss, who is the Lakers' de facto owner. Magic Johnson's disdain for Jim is very well known as his reverence for Jerry Buss, the late patriarch of the family. So, hiring him as an advisor does not bode well for Jeanie Buss brother's future.

Lakers' place in the NBA's historic pecking order is at the top with Boston. But, this is the year 2017, and in addition to what is happening in the league now, they are a dysfunctional family reaching to their past in a bid to be relevant again.

Magic Johnson is quite a passionate worker but based on his Twitter feed history, he has been prone to bad evaluations of talents same as a lot of us. When Jerry West comes back to the gold and Forum blue, the curiosity will just keep increasing.

But, the thing is until Jeanie Buss moves out brother Jim from his coveted role as Chauncey Gardiner, the Lakers may continue to just be there. The Lakers have made some good progress this season, they should be optimistic for the coming years. Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak are not being shown the door yet, but Magic Johnson didn't return to the official position in the front office to just watch and sit quietly.

But, it won't be possible for him to do anything without being questioned, he will give advice and just hope people react positively. Magic Johnson doesn't have much power to change anything substantial at the Lakers, he sold his small ownership share years ago, he's only there as an advisor because of Jeanie Buss, who doesn't hold personnel sway in the family as well.
