John Cena became a 16-time WWE world champion at the Royal Rumble after defeating A.J. Styles in an amazing match. However, Cena will reportedly have a very short title reign and he could lose it immediately at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view in two weeks.
The 39-year-old superstar wrestled the match of his life against Styles to win the WWE championship. The title win tied Ric Flair's record for the most world title wins in wrestling history. According to Cageside Seats, Flair was supposed to have a moment with Cena after the match but it was scrapped.
The report noted that the WWE did not want to make Cena's title win a big deal because he's going to have a short reign. He is expected to drop the championship at the Elimination Chamber on February 12 in Phoenix, Arizona.
One of the possible reasons for Cena losing the title quickly is he will be taking another hiatus after WrestleMania 33. He will film another Hollywood film and he's going to miss about three months. As for the next champion, it could be Bray Wyatt.
As recapped by WWE.com, Randy Orton won the 2017 Royal Rumble Match and he will main event WrestleMania 33. If the event happens today, it will be Cena vs. Orton for the WWE championship. That match has happened hundreds of times over the past decade and it's not a great matchup for the WWE to make.
All signs point to Wyatt winning the WWE championship at Elimination Chamber. Cena is set to defend the WWE title at the event against five other superstars. The challengers are expected to be Styles, Wyatt, Baron Corbin, The Miz and Dean Ambrose.
If Wyatt ends up winning the title, he'll surely face Orton at WrestleMania 33. As for Styles, he is locked in to have a match with Shane McMahon. Finally, the only mystery remaining is Cena's opponent for the biggest event of the year.
