The Miami Hurricanes have suspended defensive tackle Michael Wyche indefinitely after he was arrested by South Miami police on charges of misdemeanor domestic battery Wednesday morning.

Wyche was booked at 4:50 a.m. and remained in Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County on Wednesday afternoon on $1,500 bond. Wyche, who turned 23 on Wednesday, is scheduled to have a Nov. 18 hearing regarding the domestic battery case. A misdemeanor charge carries a maximum of one year in jail if he's convicted.

In a statement announcing the suspension, Miami said it was "aware of the situation" involving Wyche and had "no further comment at this time."

Wyche and his girlfriend of five years got into a verbal argument, which escalated when Wyche allegedly pushed and threw her onto a bed in the South Miami home they share with their child, The Palm Beach Post reported citing the police report. His girlfriend, who is also 23, told police Wyche also pushed her into a wall, causing her to hit her head. The police report indicates she suffered minor injuries, including a bloody lip, and had torn clothing.
