Robert Griffin III is worried about losing his starting quarterback job.
The Washington Redskins second-year quarterback and former Heisman Trophy winner talked Monday about his "non-griping" at the way the team is approaching his offseason knee injury, FoxSports.com reported.
Griffin tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the Redskins' NFC wild-card round playoff game to the Seattle Seahawks in January. Griffin hurt his knee in the fourth quarter but tried to keep playing on it, and the Broncos were loudly criticized for letting the then-rookie continue.
Griffin had hurt his knee a month earlier in a regular-season game against the Baltimore Ravens and had not looked healthy since.
On Monday, he questioned his coaching staff's conservative approach with the knee injury. He has not done much during the preseason, while backup Kirk Cousins has been lauded for his play during training camp.
"I don't like it. I don't understand all of it," Griffin said about the handling of his return from a major knee injury, as reported by FoxSports.com. "But (Shanahan) gave me his word. ... When you give your word to somebody that's all they have so I'm just banking that they will stay true to their word and I'm staying true to mine. I'm doing everything they ask me to do without any gripes."
"My integration to the team has been fixed without any aspect of how I'm doing personally with my knee surgery and with my knee rehab," Griffin continued. "It's pre-determined. That's the one thing I don't understand. What coach says, and he's 100 percent right, I don't have to understand it. I don't have to like it. If he plays me Week 1 and I'm ready to go then I'll give him a salute and I'll play my butt off for him."
According to FoxSports.com, Griffin's comments sounded a lot like griping.
No matter how well Cousins is playing, no one believes Griffin's job is in jeopardy once he is healthy. Unless his injury is more severe than he or the Redskins are letting on, he has no worries about returning to the lineup.
If Griffin does believe he may not get his starting role back, then his main concern should be that he has a lot left to learn about the NFL.
