In a surprise move, Rory McIlroy has decided not to play in the 2015 British Open Championship at St. Andrews. Suffering from a ruptured ligament in his left ankle, the current world No. 1 took to instagram to deliver the news.
"After much consideration, I have decided not to play in the Open Championship at St. Andrews," McIlroy wrote. "I'm taking a long term view of this injury and although rehab is progressing well, I want to come back to tournament play when I feel 100 percent healthy and 100 percent competitive. Thank you for all your support and best wishes. I hope to be back on the course as soon as I can."

Sad news for McIlroy, but good news for other PGA Tour members.
Jordan Spieth
The first beneficiary of McIlroy's absence is undoubtedly Jordan Spieth. Having won the first two Majors of the season, the 21-year-old has one less elite golfer to worry about as he chases the improbable grand slam.
Adam Scott
The world No. 11 has been inching closer to overcoming the British Open. In 2006, Scott finished tied for eighth. In 2013, he tied for third. Just last year, he tied for fourth. A troubled past to haunt him, Scott still has the motivation to finally achieve his dream.
Dustin Johnson
Speaking of troubled pasts, recent history still weighs heavy on the mind of Dustin Johnson. The 31-year-old was unable to seal the deal at Chambers Bay, putting away the U.S. Open championship with a three-putt on the 18th green. He has nine top-10 finishes in major tournaments and finished tied for fourth at the 2012 British Open.
